The immigration depot in Port Louis where half a million indentured labourers from India landed after slavery ended. A UNESCO World Heritage Site with a small, serious museum.

Two-thirds of Mauritians descend from people who walked up these steps. The depot is mostly foundations now, but the interpretation centre next to it is the best hour of history on the island, and it explains the country you are standing in better than anything else will.
Free. On the waterfront next to the bus station in Port Louis; closed Sundays and public holidays. Combine with the Central Market, ten minutes' walk away.
