Best beaches in Mauritius

Every beach in Mauritius is public below the high-water mark, including the ones in front of the hotels. What differs is the water. The north is calm and shallow; the west is calm and deep with the sunsets; the east has wind and the sunrise; the south has cliffs and one gap in the reef where the ocean comes in unbroken.

These are the ones worth driving to. We have left out the beaches that only exist as hotel frontage.

Questions people ask

Are beaches in Mauritius free?
Yes. All beaches are public by law. Hotels control access through their grounds but not the sand or sea; public beaches have their own road access and parking.
Which side of Mauritius has the best beaches?
North for calm, shallow, family water and services. West for deeper water, calm sea and sunsets. East is windier and emptier. South is dramatic rather than swimmable.
When is the sea warmest in Mauritius?
December to April, around 28°C. In July and August it drops to about 23°C, which is still swimmable but you will notice.
