The capital: the Central Market, Chinatown, the Caudan waterfront, the racecourse and a working port. Half a day, on foot, then leave before the traffic.

Port Louis is a real city, hot and noisy, and the only place on the island where all of Mauritius is in one street. The Central Market for spices, herbal 'tisane' sellers and dholl puri; Chinatown for lunch; the waterfront for the museum and shade; and Champ de Mars, the oldest racecourse in the southern hemisphere, on a race Saturday.
Free to walk. Go on a weekday morning, park at the Caudan waterfront, and do the market first while it is cool. The city empties after five and is not somewhere to wander at night. Bus from anywhere on the island if you do not want to drive in.
