Hidden gems in Mauritius

Most of the island sits behind a coral reef and most visitors sit behind a hotel wall. Both are fine. But a few kilometres from every resort there is something that is not on the coach itinerary, costs nothing, and is where people who live here actually go on a Sunday.

None of these need a ticket. Most need a car and a willingness to drive down a cane-field track. Ordered so you can string neighbours together in a day.

Questions people ask

Are these places safe to visit on my own?
Yes, in daylight. Several are on estate land with tolerated access: if a gate is shut or someone says no, that is the answer for today. Cliff edges and river pools are unfenced; treat them as such.
Can I reach the hidden gems without a car?
Mahébourg and Port Louis by bus, easily. The rest, realistically, no. A hire car for two days covers the whole south coast.
