Things to do in Mauritius

Mauritius is sold as a beach. It is also a volcano with a rainforest in the middle, a Hindu pilgrimage lake, two national parks, a UNESCO mountain, a capital with the best street food in the Indian Ocean and a coastline that changes character every twenty kilometres.

This is everything on the island we think is worth your time, with an honest line on each about why, how, and when. Filter by what you are in the mood for, or read the region guides if you already know which coast you are sleeping on.

Questions people ask

How many days do you need in Mauritius?
Seven is the number that works: two in the north, two in the south-west, two in the east, one for the centre. Ten lets you slow down. Four is a beach holiday with one day out.
Do you need a car in Mauritius?
For anything on this list beyond your hotel beach, yes. Taxis are expensive by the day and buses stop early. Hire cars are cheap by European standards and driving is on the left.
What is the best area to stay in Mauritius?
North for beaches, restaurants and boat trips; west for sunsets, Le Morne and calm sea; east for quiet and wind; south for cliffs and the wild coast. See our where-to-stay guide.
