A flat, quiet forest on the north-east coast with easy trails, the ruins of a sugar mill, and the endemic paradise flycatcher. You will likely have it to yourself.

Black River Gorges gets the visitors; Bras d'Eau gets nobody. It is the island's other national park, flat enough for anyone, with a ruined mill and lime kiln in the trees and the best odds anywhere of seeing the Mascarene paradise flycatcher, a small bird with a very long tail.
Free. Trails start at the visitor centre off the coast road between Poste Lafayette and Roches Noires. Two to five kilometres, all easy. Insect repellent, water, and go early for birds.
