Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth

Dunes of volcanic sand in seven distinct colours that never mix, inside a geopark with a waterfall viewpoint and giant tortoises on the same ticket.

Why go

It is small, it is famous, and it is genuinely odd: bands of red, brown, violet and yellow earth that stay separate however much it rains. The same ticket includes the viewpoint over Chamarel waterfall, which on its own would be worth the drive.

How to do it

Paid entry at the geopark gate on the Chamarel road; you drive between the stops inside. Go at opening or late afternoon, when the coach groups are elsewhere and the low sun makes the colours read. Twenty minutes at the dunes is enough.
