Coin de Mire (Gunner's Quoin)

The wedge-shaped islet off the north coast, a nature reserve you circle by boat. Diving and snorkelling in its lee, tropicbirds on the cliffs, and the view that fills every north-coast photo.

Why go

The islet is the shape of a gunner's wedge, hence the name, and it sits in every view from the north coast. Up close the cliffs are full of white-tailed tropicbirds and the water on the sheltered side is the clearest in the north. Most people see it from the beach; the boat is worth it.

How to do it

By boat only; landing is not permitted, it is a reserve. Snorkelling and dive trips leave from Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux, often combined with Flat Island and Île Gabriel, which you can land on. Book a day ahead.
