Île aux Cerfs

The east coast's island day trip: sandbars, a shallow lagoon, parasailing and a lot of other people. Go early, go on a weekday, walk away from the jetty.

Why go

It is on every list because the beaches are as good as the photos: white sandbars in a turquoise lagoon. It is also busy. The trick is to arrive on the first boat, walk twenty minutes along the shore from the jetty, and you have a beach to yourself until the catamarans come in at eleven.

How to do it

Public boats leave from Trou d'Eau Douce every half hour; catamaran days from the same village or from Pointe Jérôme include lunch and the GRSE waterfall. The island itself is free; the golf course and restaurant are not. Bring water and shade.

Questions people ask

How do I get to Île aux Cerfs cheaply?
Take the public shuttle boat from Trou d'Eau Douce jetty rather than a hotel transfer. Boats run all morning and return through the afternoon; agree the return time with the boatman.
