The old Dutch and French port in the south-east: a Monday market on the waterfront, the Naval Museum, street food and a lagoon with Lion Mountain behind it.

Mahébourg is the most Mauritian town on the coast. The Monday market is an hour of spices, fabric, gateaux piments and gossip; the waterfront looks across the lagoon to Lion Mountain; and the Naval Museum, in a planter's house, tells the story of the one naval battle Napoleon won against the British.
Free. Come on a Monday morning for the market, any day for the waterfront and museum. Park in town and walk. Eat where the queue is: fried noodles, dholl puri and boulettes from the stalls near the bus station.
