A river-mouth bay below Rempart mountain: dolphins most mornings offshore, the island's only surf, and salt pans and a dark-sand beach that few visitors bother with.

Tamarin has three things the resort coast does not. Spinner and bottlenose dolphins rest in the bay early most mornings, and the boat trips to see them leave from here. It has the only regular surf break on the island. And it still feels like a village.
Free to visit; dolphin trips are paid and leave around 6am from the bay or from Black River. Choose an operator that keeps distance and does not chase; the small speedboats that drop swimmers on top of the pods are the ones to avoid. The beach is public, the sand is darker than the north.
