Trou aux Cerfs

A dormant volcano crater in the middle of Curepipe, with a road around the rim. Drive up, walk the rim, look down into the crater lake and out across the whole plateau.

Why go

The island is a volcano and this is the crater you can drive to. The rim road is a ten-minute walk with the whole central plateau around you and, on a clear day, both coasts. Locals jog it at dawn. Ten minutes later you can be eating in Curepipe.

How to do it

Free, drive-up. In the middle of Curepipe; follow signs from the town centre. Early morning before the cloud sits down on the plateau is the only time to count on the view.
