Gris Gris and La Roche qui Pleure

The one stretch of coast with no reef, so the Indian Ocean hits the cliffs at full strength. A cliff walk, a wild beach and the 'weeping rock' outside Souillac.

Why go

Almost the whole island sits behind a coral reef, which is why the lagoons are flat. Gris Gris is the gap. The waves come in from Antarctica and break on black cliffs; locals come here to think, not to swim. The Roche qui Pleure, a rock that looks like a face crying with spray, is a ten-minute walk along the top.

How to do it

Free. Park at the Gris Gris viewpoint on the edge of Souillac and follow the path along the cliffs to the east. Do not swim; the currents are the reason there are signs. Combine with the Telfair garden and the Robert Edward Hart museum in Souillac.
